Prepare for Pentecost - return to the cross

A recent online World Prayer Centre team prayer watch meeting turned into a significant altar moment about preparing for Pentecost and returning to the Cross. One of the team reminded us to focus again on the cross after Easter. Another teammate, Diana, said that at another online prayer meeting God prompted her to share ‘re-‘ words. She told us that God had shown her that ‘re’- means Ruach Elohim, or Holy Spirit. We realised that all re- words are life-giving. Then the words started to flow: Refresh, Renew, Rebuild, Restore, Reset, Realign, Relationship, Revival … to name a few! All this happened on the first day after the Jewish New Year, a time of new beginnings. So we urge you to return with us to the place of prayer. Remember the cross and all that Jesus did for us. We invite you to speak out the Easter to Pentecost declaration each day. We pray that God will reignite you with Ruach Elohim this Pentecost and that many will be revived to see a spiritual awakening.

Shine your Light this Christmas!

This Christmas, the World Prayer Centre, Birmingham encourages Christians to shine their light in their communities, grappling with a severe mental health crisis marked in part by alarming suicide rates across the UK. Tragic stories of despair, such as a teenager in Nottingham, a girl in Belfast suffering from online abuse, and a former rugby player's suicide, highlight the urgency of bringing hope and light to those in pain. The 'Shine Your Light' campaign urges Christians to step out of their churches and engage with their communities in meaningful ways. On the weekend of 16-17 December, through events in town halls, high streets, and public places, Christians will be encouraged to gather, pray, and ask for Jesus's light on the nation. Churches and individuals are invited to sign up and participate, bringing hope and the light of Jesus to their communities. For further details, including the resources available, go to the campaign website below.

8@80: Ian Cole’s walk of blessing

Ian Cole, founder of World Prayer Centre, will be celebrating his 80th birthday by embarking on an eight-mile sponsored "Walk of Blessing" across parts of South Birmingham. The walk, taking place on 30 September, aims to pray blessings on every church and school along the route. Ian has set a sponsorship target of £80,000 (£1,000 for each year of his life) and is asking for support based on the number 8 (£8, £18, £80, £800, £8,000...). So far, £22,773 has been raised. He was recently given the ‘all clear’ after being diagnosed with prostate and bladder cancer in 2020. The money raised from the challenge will benefit three charities: World Prayer Centre, Love Your Neighbour (based in inner-city Birmingham), and Advantage Africa (working among the poorest in Kenya and Uganda). World Prayer Centre operates locally, nationally, and globally. The WPC team and Ian's family will join him on the walk, and they are thrilled for any sponsorship support as Ian celebrates his milestone birthday and his service for God and the body of Christ.

Japan’s Kishida Fumio will host the G7 summit between 19 and 21 May. He condemns Russian aggression and feels that what is happening in Europe could easily happen in the Indo-Pacific. G7 sees climate change as a concern, but Japan reminds us we need to confront proliferation of nuclear weapons. Putin has threatened to use nuclear weapons should the Ukraine conflict not go his way. A global effort is needed to lessen the possibility of using them. This summit is in the Indo-Pacific region, ripe for future peacekeeping needs across the Taiwan Strait. China’s aggression towards Taiwan would threaten peace globally. On 20 May at 10 am BST (GMT+1) the World Prayer Centre in Birmingham is calling people to pray for the summit, the G7 leaders, Japan, and many of the above issues. Hope for the Countryside prayer walk

From 19 June to 4 September, mission teams from Through Faith Mission are walking the ‘Via Beata’ footpath through the countryside of central England and Wales. The teams are going out literally without bread or money and no agenda or programme, trusting the Lord to provide both their needs and opportunities to share the gospel and serve others (Matthew 10:1-15; Luke 10:1-20). By mid-June, around 100 people had signed up for one or more of the eleven weeks. A similar number have pledged to pray. Join them in praying that the Lord will use the teams to bring the hope of the Gospel to many in the countryside of Britain and encourage rural churches along the way and add to their number. Also you are invited to join ‘Hope Countryside Online Prayer Gathering’ on 31 July, where intercession will be for the churches and communities for rural Britain. See

The UK economy was reported as being close to turning point on eve of leaving EU. Confidence is rising three and a half years after the Brexit vote but the tight timescale for a trade deal could harm recovery.

Britain’s economy is close to a turning point as the country prepares to formally leave the EU after almost half a century of membership, according to a Guardian analysis of economic news over the past month.

More than three and a half years after voting to leave, the UK will formally depart on Friday with the economy close to stalling point following repeated cliff-edge deadlines and intense political uncertainty over the country’s future trading relationships with the EU and other countries.

In the Guardian’s final Brexit watch before the exit date, warning lights were flashing with zero growth forecast for the final three months of 2019 amid intense political uncertainty, rounding off the worst year for growth outside of a recession since the second world war. Speculation had been rising that the Bank of England would cut interest rates on Thursday to reboot growth on the eve of leaving the EU.

However, there are also early shoots of recovery from a surge in business confidence since Boris Johnson’s unexpected decisive election victory, which could tempt the Bank to leave borrowing costs on hold at Mark Carney’s final rate-setting meeting in charge at Threadneedle Street. Carney will stand down in March to be replaced by Andrew Bailey.

To gauge the impact of Brexit on a monthly basis, the Guardian has been monitoring eight economic indicators over the past three years, along with the value of the pound and the performance of the FTSE 100.

City economists made forecasts for seven of those barometers before the data was released, and in six cases over the past month the outcome was better than expected, raising hopes that Britain can rebound from a period of lacklustre growth.

The World Prayer Centre, Birmingham, UK have initiated a Call to prayer – on 31st January and during the forthcoming transition phase. The invitation to followers of Jesus across the nations is to continue to call on the name of the Lord for His will, His kingdom and His perfect purposes and plans for the UK nations and our Continent to be outworked.

We believe that God works everything for His good – and so we come humbly and repent for what has gone wrong in the whole process of the last 3 years and ask for His mercy and His heart to start the process of rebuilding (Psalm 127.1)

We believe we have been entrusted with the ministry of reconciliation - so we ask for a fresh desire to arise within each follower of Jesus to be a messenger of comfort, peace, hope and reconciliation (2 Corinthians 5:18)

We believe that we are asked to pray for those in leadership – so we ask for Boris Johnson and all in the UK governments/assemblies for God’s wisdom and direction especially regarding the transition talks (1 Timothy 2:1-4)

Our Father in heaven hallowed be Your Name
We believe in God the Father almighty creator of heaven and earth
We hallow (honour) Your Holy name over the UK Nations
We hallow (honour) Your Holy name over every European Nation

We pray for Your Kingdom to come
In and through the transition period discussions between UK and EU
In and through all trade talks with other nations

For Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven
Through our leaders: Boris Johnson and the UK government
Michael Barnier and the EU team
In our relationships with all the Leaders of the European nations

Give us today our daily bread
We pray for reconciliation at every level in our society
We ask for a fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit on His church
We ask for continued and growing freedom for the Gospel across all of Europe and for continued and growing freedom for the Bible to be read across all the nations

Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us
Lord, have mercy on us as a UK nation
Lord, have mercy on us as Your church
Lord, have mercy on the EU
Lord, have mercy on every nation in Europe

Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil
Bring into the light those with evil intent of division and destruction
We pray for peace on our streets
Bring into the light those whose intent is greed and manipulation
Bless all the work of the peacemakers.

For the Kingdom, the power and the glory are Yours now and for ever
We pray that Your name will be glorified
We pray that millions will come to know Jesus as the Way, the Truth and the Life
We bless every nation with the blessing of Your Shalom peace
You are our rock, we look to You, we trust You.

Amen.
