As western economies continue to flounder, the G20 meeting in Cannes on November 3rd and 4th has taken on epic importance in the minds of economists. Something has to happen there, western politicians insist, that will save the west, and particularly Europe, from its current deadlock. Many are saying ‘the G20 summit must look beyond the west and think of the rest’ and 'G20 heads of state, engage yourself finally against hunger in the world', which was written on an Action Against Hunger banner in Paris this week. Also thousands of anti-capitalist demonstrators are expected at the G20 summit despite French police plans to close the Italian border. A recent New York Times headline read, ‘No Jobs and No Ideas’ as the Occupy Wall Street protests entered their fourth week. More than twelve bombs struck Baghdad on Tuesday evening, killing 36 people and wounding 320 others in coordinated blasts two days after Al Qaeda linked gunmen stormed a church in one of the deadliest attacks in a year. (see item 1 above). Baghdad security officials were considering an immediate curfew on the city. ‘We don’t know what’s happening right now. There are so many explosions and reports we’re overwhelmed’ said an anonymous interior ministry official. The bombings were spread among coffee shops over a one-hour period in the early evening. Almost eight months after Iraqis went to the polls there is still no new government in place. Many say this political deadlock fuelled the violence. Be'er Sheva District Court cut off 4,000 Bedouins water supply for 24 hours because they don’t want to shoulder a Bedouin water bill. Bedouin children collected water from petrol stations and siphoned water from a water pipe in the area in desperation. ‘They're not under the jurisdiction of Lakiya, but their water bills are sent to us. said the council head referring to the Bedouin residents. Spokespersons for the Bedouins reported, ‘Apparently the children of Be'er Sheva are more important than the children of the Bedouin' diasporas.’ and another said the Bedouin do actually pay for their water, but explained that water use is estimated as those living in villages that are not officially recognized by the state lack water meters and other infrastructure. See:  The bodies of a Briton, six Americans, a German, and two Afghan interpreters were discovered in northern Afghanistan. Kenya’s President appealed for peace as Kenyans vote this weekend on a draft constitution intended to limit the powers of the president and set up a commission to settle land disputes that fuelled past violence. Pastor D.S.W. writes, ‘Put our nation Kenya in the hands of God. The leadership is not united. There is much tension towards the referendum and much frustration among tribes receiving letters telling them to leave where they are staying just because of land. This happened during the 2007 election and stirred fighting which resulted in many people being killed. Please pray for us. Spiritually as Christians we are praying and serving God as he called us to be His ambassadors among the nations.’ President Mwai Kibaki and former President Daniel Arap Moi, who opposes the draft, have delivered hate speech during the campaign. This INSIGHT article gives some background information to assist prayers.

Pray: for God to drench Kenya with joyful passions and positive anticipation; and for the Kenyan Church to become a symbol of unity. (Ps.131)
