‘Beyond the Pandemic: Is there any word from the Lord?’ by Rev Dr Clifford Hill

When a pandemic is unleashed, how should Christians respond?

Beyond the Pandemic provides a Biblical view of the contemporary world situation.

It focuses upon what the Biblical prophets called “the deeds of the Lord” – the historical evidence of the activity of God in the life and times of the leaders of Israel and Judah, from Moses to Malachi. This revelation of the nature of God is set alongside contemporary events, providing a prophetic view of God’s purposes in these troubled times.

After years of warnings to our society, which has turned its back on Him, who is both Creator and Sovereign over the world in which we live, we must either repent or face yet worse afflictions; Hill points us to the only effective remedy – God’s word spoken through Isaiah 45:22, “Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth, for I am God and there is no other.”

The Rev. Dr Clifford Hill MA, BD, PhD, Sociologist and Theologian, is a lecturer, preacher and broadcaster who has written over forty books. He is an ordained minister in the Congregational church, has led multi-ethnic congregation in London and continues to exercise pastoral oversight of an inner-city church.

He is editor-in-chief of Prophecy Today UK, which seeks to apply God’s word in the Bible to current affairs and, with his wife, Monica, is joint director of Issachar Ministries which supports Christians in prayer and action.

Join us November 8th to 22nd 2020 in 15 days of prayer for Hindus all over the world!

The 2020 Hindu Prayer Guide - November 8th – 22nd 2020

The annual Hindu World Prayer Focus is calling Christians and churches worldwide to take 15 days to learn about and pray for our world’s over one billion Hindu friends.

That period also encompasses the significant Hindu Festival of Light (Diwali). The informative prayer guide booklets will help Christians to know how to pray for the people(s) growing up within this major and very diverse world religion.

Diwali (or Deepawali) is known as the Festival of Lights, and is one of the most important annual celebrations for Hindus, lasting about 4-5 days. While (similar to Christmas celebrations in the Christian world) it has historical and religious roots, Hindus celebrate it by lighting and displaying rows of small oil lamps, participating in family gatherings, consuming special sweets and watching fireworks.

It is not our intention with this prayer focus to disparage India or the Hindu religion in any way. We recognize that both are far too complex and too full of great traditions to simply or easily condense, explain or take lightly within a mere booklet.

At the same time, as Christians, we long that all the world’s people(s) will have an opportunity to freely see, hear and understand the grace of God incarnated in Jesus Christ.

To this end we inform ourselves, pray for and want to support opportunities to make that grace known also within the world’s Indian and Hindu communities. Get your copy of the 15 Days Hindu Prayer Guide now and join with us!

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ

Amidst many tense situations around the world, we are urgently needing to call our friends across the global church to a dedicated time of breakthrough prayer for Nigeria.

Curfews are being imposed across the country following two weeks of protests and disorder focused against police brutality.  It is reported that 12 protestors were killed by soldiers in Lagos on Tuesday.

IPC’s West Africa Director, Austen Ukachi is a Senior Pastor based in Lagos, Nigeria. He has prepared the following briefing and prayer points.

Please let’s act on this in Nigeria’s time of need, and share this with our contacts and fellow networks.

Call to Pray for Nigeria

HOW IT BEGAN

On Friday, 9 October 2020, a peaceful protest by a handful of youths in Lagos State, Nigeria under the hashtag ENDSARS commenced. This demonstration was triggered by a viral video on the social media showing SARS (Special Anti-Robbery Squad) Police officers shooting a young Nigerian in front of Wetland Hotel, Ughelli, Delta State.

SARS was an arm of the Nigerian Police formed in 1992 to tackle rising cases of armed robbery and violent crime in Nigeria. However, over time, SARS lost its way and adopted the ‘Gestapo style’ in their operation, hounding mostly innocent youths into detention and causing the death of some of them. Unfortunately, many Nigerians began to perceive SARS as worse than the problem it was created to solve.

The protest, therefore, gave vent to the anger and discontent that had built up in the youths through the years. The demonstrations did not appear as one that was pre-planned but a response from the younger generation who trooped out in different cities as events developed. It was a demonstration that was technology-driven and spread over the Nation and beyond in a few days.

Prayer walks were happening simultaneously with the protests. Young Christian men and women mobilised themselves to join in the protests but with the intention to pray for Nigeria. Church leaders and major denominations also participated in this aspect of the events.

The Nigerian Government responded by disbanding SARS and hastily setting up a new unit to be known as SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team. The youths were not satisfied with this measure especially as they realised that this would basically mean recycling the same personnel from SARS to SWAT without addressing the fundamental issues in their protest, namely the prosecution of all those who were indicted for crime.

As the protests continued, violence began to creep in. Hoodlums allegedly sponsored by the Government and other interest groups began to attack the peaceful demonstrators. The Nigerian Military also announced a nation-wide exercise code-named Operation Crocodile Smile to coincide with the demonstrations. Many people saw this as a ploy by Government to use force to stop the protests. That is why soldiers have been accused to be responsible for the killing of several protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos, on 20TH October 2020. Though this has been denied by the Nigerian Military but video evidence appear to confirm the allegation.

From that moment, the protests turned violent, irate youths went on the loose, burning and destroying government properties; hoodlums also began to loot shops and attack innocent citizens. The chaos has led several state governments in Nigeria to impose 24-hour curfew to curtail the rampage of the youths.

Notwithstanding what has happened and is developing, there is a paradigm shift in Nigeria and we believe that things cannot remain the same again.

NEED TO INTENSIFY PRAYERS

In the light of the above, the Church of God ought at this stage to engage in ceaseless prayers and intercession at family levels, churches and online platforms.

Nigeria is desperately in need of prayers from the global Church. Please join us to pray along the following lines:

  • Thank the Lord that we are beginning to see the fulfilment of some of the things He had spoken in the past concerning Nigeria. Declare Isaiah 25:9
  • Declare Jeremiah 3:23 and affirm our faith and confidence in the Lord alone.
  • Bring repentance over the atrocities and wickedness perpetrated by SARS over the years; the injustices, corruption, maladministration that has subjected the younger generation to the dehumanization and under-utilization of their God given talents and skills.
  • Bring repentance over the excessive bloodletting in Nigeria, especially the killing of unarmed youths at the Lekki Toll Gate on Tuesday 20 October 2020.
  • Declare that the Lord would have His way in what is happening presently. Isaiah 46:10; Acts 15:18
  • May God raise up credible voices and leaders amongst the youths, locally and internationally, who will coordinate and guide them through this generational shift.
  • Pray that the eyes of our leaders will be open, that they make decisions that would honour God and that will free the next generation
  • Resist the wicked one and declare that neither Satan nor the Nigerian Government would be able to abort what God has begun to do in Nigeria. Isaiah 14:26-27; Job 5:12.
  • Pray that this would not be like the “Arab Spring” which turned out to be “Arab Winter!”
  • Pray for God to restrain violence and to protect all peoples living in Nigeria who are suffering uncertainty and fear.
  • Pray against the spirits responsible for bloodletting in Nigeria. Let us decree that there shall be no further loss of innocent lives in Nigeria through this crisis.
  • Pray for the soldiers and Police officers charged with ensuring peace and security. May the Spirit of God overshadow them and ensure they do their jobs with the fear of God.
  • Pray that God would use this crisis to lead entire cities and communities to Christ.
  • Pray that Christians would be unified behind one thing - the gospel of Jesus Christ; that they would not succumb to the trick of the enemy to factionalise the Body of Christ
  • Pray against the attempt to give the protests a tribal colouration and thereby pitching one tribe against another.
  • Pray that this ongoing development will lead to revival in Nigeria, a great move of God among the youths, in the family, Church, corporate world, Governance and in all spheres of the society. Remind God of His promise in Numbers 14:21; Isaiah 11:6-9

From a prayer letter sent to European intercessors: ‘The British Empire once believed “the sun would never set” based on a firm belief that God was with us because of our faith built on Christian values. The Church can no longer say, “British values are Christian values”. To be British is no longer to be Christian. UK’s leaders increasingly move us further away from the Biblical values that once underpinned both our democratic and legal systems, which were envied by much of the world. I paint a gloomy picture of the nation I love, but if we are to pray effectively in the current worldwide pandemic, I believe nations should be questioning their values and morals. Do we first love God and secondly love our neighbour as ourselves? The future of the UK depends on the next few months. Pray for the national day of prayer currently being proposed. Pray also that the European Union of Prayer meeting will still be allowed in London from 26 to 30 October with current Covid 19 restrictions. May God make a way with a reduced number of participants.’

Greetings!

We are pleased to bring you IPC Connections for October 2020.

Last month, we reported a sudden throng of events around the globe focused on calling the church to identificational repentance, nation by nation.  We shared how leaders have been led simultaneously to draw the Church together to pray concertedly in the spirit of ‘If my people…’ (2 Chron 7:14) for the healing and renewing of each of our lands.  We have seen numerous online events and initiatives take place during September and spilling into October.

One of our colleagues listed just some of the larger events… Lou Engle's 40-day global Jesus fast, The Return, The Franklin Graham March, The Reset, As One Rally, 50 Days of Blessings, National Day of Prayer, 10 Days of Prayer, Sara's 50 Day Siege and One Cry.  Then there have been Trumpet Call to the Nations on 911, World Prayer Together on 19th September and the forthcoming US National Prayer Assembly on October 13-15 that some of the IPC team have been involved with planning.

As this season continues, let’s be praying that our Heavenly Father hears our heart-cries from Heaven and heals our lands.  There are replays of a number of these events for those who have not been able to log-on at the time. Some are listed in this email.

Our Editorial article this month, and three lead articles, are focused on prayers for America as we face perhaps the most important Presidential Elections in our history on November 3rd.  Please be in prayer for ‘Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done’ as our nation considers who they should be voting for.  We sincerely thank IPC’s friend and colleague, David Kubal for contributing our October editorial article entitled ‘America Needs Your Intercession’.

The Covid-19 pandemic has now affected 33.4 million people worldwide with over a million now losing their lives.  We bring you up to date information on this along with prayer points and links to various resources.

Thank you for continuing to partner with us in mobilising and informing united prayer across nations, denominations, movements, and generations for the fulfilment of the Great Commission.

May we express grateful thanks to Andy Page and the IPC Editorial Team who put this email together each month.

Wishing you His continued blessings,

Jason Hubbard - Executive Coordinator

By David Kubal, Intercessors for America President/CEO

I am deeply humbled and blessed beyond measure by the prayers of the nations for America. For 47 years, Intercessors for America has been praying for godly government.

I want you to know how very much I appreciate the prayers of people outside the United States for our nation. It lifts our spirits and encourages us in our own intercession.

In this election season, I ask for your prayers for American values, our church, and for our government.

Values

Protection of Life. Nothing is more precious to God than life. From conception to natural death, God desires life to be protected. (Ps 139:13)

Pray for the value of life to be embraced by candidates and in their platforms.

Protection of the Family. Our society and our Supreme Court have embraced tragic views that grieve the heart of God and allow a diversity of what a legal family looks like based upon individual, personal beliefs about gender, attraction, and more. Although no belief or court opinion will ever have the power to redefine that which God has defined, efforts to change what family is have nevertheless wreaked havoc on our lives. (Gen 1:27, 28)

Pray for the strengthening and upholding of the family in America. Pray for healing where there is harm and brokenness and for a true understanding of identity to flourish.

Protection of Religious Freedoms. Attack on religious freedoms is the reason many of the early immigrants to our nation came to America. They sought the freedom to be able to worship their God! We need legislators and elected officials who have a heart to protect all faiths. This protection would in turn allow the Church to be the Church and give us the opportunity to be salt and light in our nation. (Ps 19:7)

Pray for elected officials and judges at all levels to protect the free exercise of religion. Pray that laws infringing religious freedom would be overturned. Pray for our leaders to uphold and honor the fundamental right of religious freedom.

The Church

The Church is designed to foster our spiritual lives, and the government our civil lives. Even so, the Bible indicates that the Church should guide our morals as well as our civics.

Government is not the source of spiritual revival. Though we desire our elected officials to be god-fearing, trustworthy, and full of integrity, we do not look to them as spiritual leaders.

The Church should influence government indirectly through the moral training of leaders and diplomats, but it is not to seek authority or validity from governments. God established the Church. And the Church stewards the nation, not the other way around. The Church is commanded to influence government through prayer and intercession, cooperating with the will and plan of God.

Pray for the American Church to arise and shine, bringing the Gospel message to every community in America.
Pray for the American Church to have a profound and lasting impact on the United States and this election.

Government

And you shall teach them the statutes and the laws, and show them the way in which they must walk and the work they must do. Moreover, you shall select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. (Ex 18:20-21)

Through divine wisdom, the ancient Hebrews were the first to create a representative republic based upon law. This was the blueprint for the republic we now enjoy in the United States.

This element of the divine blueprint, “Moreover you shall select from all the people,” is the most important because those who are selected have the opportunity to affect everything. Scripture is clear that those to be selected are to be able, God-fearing, truthful, and content. These are the values we are to look for in candidates. Those of us with biblical worldviews must go beyond the rhetoric and discern candidates’ hearts and values.

For months, Intercessors for America has been praying for literally millions of potential voters across the nation, by name. We are praying that Christians will vote their values--  for candidates who reflect the heart of God for the leaders of the United States.

Pray strategically for the Body of Christ to be salt and light in the civil arena.
Pray for the many Christians running for office and serving in government to be strengthened in grace and truth.
Pray for the election of leaders who will govern in fear of God, truth, and hating covetousness.
