The Bible for everyone

What would life be without Jesus? Thousands of people have never met a Christian or heard the Good News in their mother tongue. In 2018 more people than ever will find out that God is reaching out to them. Wycliffe Bible Translators personnel work tirelessly towards the goal of delivering the message of Jesus in people's heart languages, while organisations like MAF travel across continents to deliver God's Word to new believers. Recently a South Sudanese Christian said, 'I was jealous of white people being blessed by having the Word of God in their own language. We had no Bible in Baka.’ Then he gave a broad grin: ‘Now I am happy because I have a Baka Bible. God did not forget us.’ Now Christians speaking Baka can share God’s Word with those around them who do not yet know the salvation Christ offers. ‘God has been with me always’

After nearly three years in exile in Kurdistan, ten-year-old Helda Hindi and her younger brother and parents who fled from IS have returned to their home town in the Nineveh plains. She spoke about the night of 6 August 2014, when IS seized her hometown. ’Alarm bells rang out in our streets - we had to escape the living hell of violence and terrorism. I left, crying, with no hope of ever seeing my town, my school, or my friends again. We lived in torment and tragedy until we got used to it.’ She related her harrowing experiences, but finished, ‘And today, by God's grace, we have returned to our town and I am back in school among my friends. We had only God and we never stopped believing in His power and praying for His mercy for all those hurting in Iraq and around the world.’

New Calais border treaty

Last week we prayed for God to soften President Macron’s heart and prompt him to help refugees still living rough in Calais while officials take months to process their claims. On 19 January Mr Macron and Theresa May signed a treaty designed to reduce the backlog of migrants by greater cooperation. The agreement will strengthen an accord known as Le Touquet, signed in 2003, which moved the British border to France. This will remain in force, but Macron said France will no longer be Britain’s ‘coastguard’ without concessions from the UK to help ease the crisis. Under the new, legally binding treaty, Britain will speed up ways of accepting legitimate asylum seekers currently stranded in Calais, including those seeking to re-join families in the UK and unaccompanied children.

Charges dropped against street preachers

David Barker and Stephen Wan were preaching the gospel in Camberley in December. Hecklers gathered and claimed that the preachers said ‘homosexuals are going to hell’ and ‘man cannot lie with man’. The preachers deny saying this. David spoke about the good news of Christmas, quoting Romans 3:23, ‘All people have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God’, and John 3:16. Stephen explained Jesus was called ‘Jesus’ because he would save his people from their sins, and he came into the world to atone for the sins of all mankind. A heckler accused him of preaching hate and asked about homosexuality. Stephen explained the Genesis creation story, adding that ‘marriage is an institution ordained by God for the purpose of procreation’. The two men were questioned by the police, but with help from the Christian Legal Centre, all charges against them were dropped.

Christian films in cinemas and online

The faith-based company Pure Flix Entertainment will release the film Samson in the UK on 2 March. It was filmed in South Africa, and its themes of showcase passion, betrayal, and redemption will inspire audiences to realise that life's failures need not define their future. As with Netflix, viewers will be offered streaming services with faith- and family-friendly content, like the film ‘God's Not Dead’ and its sequel ‘God's Not Dead 2.’ Also, they will be offered the first month of viewing free, giving them the option to see some of their favourite films without paying. Latin America: survivors of trafficking

The International Justice Mission (IJM) writes, ‘Praise God for a successful and restoring 2017! Our Latin America teams walked faithfully alongside seventy boys and girls who are survivors of sexual violence and sex trafficking, through the ups and downs of trauma-focused therapy. In this process, our social workers and psychologists consistently work with each survivor and their family, to address the trauma they have experienced and help create a safe and stable environment that will support their healing process.’ IJM invites us to pray for these boys and girls, their families, and their communities.

Government reconsiders transgender plans

The Government is reconsidering a proposed new law which would allow adults to choose to change their gender without consulting a doctor. Reports suggest that education secretary and equalities minister Justine Greening now has cold feet on the proposals, which would affect all of the UK other than Scotland. A public consultation will now take place only after civil servants have completed analysis of a separate diversity survey. This is good news with which to start the New Year. Last year the Coalition for Marriage met MPs and worked with several other campaign groups to oppose these proposals. It argued that they would undermine traditional marriage and put women and children at risk.

Ethiopia to release political prisoners

In a surprise move, Hailemariam Desalegn, the Ethiopian prime minister, has announced the release of political prisoners and the closure of a notorious detention centre, allegedly used as a torture chamber. He said the move was designed to allow political dialogue. It is still unclear exactly who will be released or when it will happen. Ethiopia is accused by rights groups of using mass arrests to stifle opposition. Amnesty International welcomed Mr Hailemariam's announcement, saying it could signal ‘the end of an era of bloody repression in Ethiopia’.

Looking forward to 2018

In 2017 we have witnessed miracles and seen suffering. But as we look ahead to 2018, we remember and proclaim that God is sovereign over every corner of the globe! He alone is the hope of 2018 - the Hope of the Nations. Though some situations may seem hopeless, we recognise and rejoice that He reigns ‘far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title’ and that ‘all things are under His feet’ (Ephesians 1:21,22). Nothing is impossible for Him. ‘The LORD has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all’ (Psalm 103:19). Nothing has or ever will usurp His authority and power. He reigns, and He rules over China and Europe, North Korea and Syria, Boko Haram, and IS. He rules over polio, cancer, and hunger. He rules over corporations, celebrities, and sports. He even rules over galaxies, stars, and planets, ‘and calls them each by name’ (Ps. 147:5).

Created for a purpose

God has a purpose for each one of us, something unique that He calls us to respond to. Dallas Derksen thought he already had his plan, but then realised that the Lord had another path for him and his family. He faithfully followed God’s calling, and is now leading the MAF team in Mongolia, a vast and beautiful land that is difficult to travel in, with extremely cold and turbulent winters. MAF light aircraft support the work of a small but growing Church, development agencies and government bodies across Mongolia. They provide inflight patient care, training for local doctors, and enable NGOs such as Reaching the Light to offer physical, speech and education therapy to children. Dallas says, ‘Our plane also becomes an air ambulance as we carry out many emergency airlifts for the sick and injured.’
