This week, prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed hope for the possibility of a diplomatic resolution with the Palestinians, and with the Arab world in general, under Donald Trump’s tutelage. Speaking at a festive dinner at his residence in Jerusalem, Mr Netanyahu told Mr Trump that he looked forward to working closely with him to advance peace in the region - ‘because you have noted so succinctly that common dangers are turning former enemies into partners’. Mr Netanyahu was referring to the reported change in the stance of Sunni Arab states in the region, who are shifting away from animosity towards Israel towards a possible working relationship.

Escalating events: -President Putin claims to have records of the meeting between Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov and President Trump. -Reports that Trump asked former FBI director James Comey to drop an investigation into the former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s links to Russia. -The White House denies there was ever a Trump/Comey meeting. -Israel emerges as supplying sensitive security intelligence to Trump. -Trump shared the material with Russia. -Trump fired Comey, who was leading investigative links between the Trump campaign and Russia. -The New York Times cited a memo Comey wrote about his meeting with Trump in February. Did the US president try to influence an FBI investigation? Now former prosecutor and FBI director Robert Mueller will oversee an independent inquiry into ‘Russia,/Trump true/fake news’. Democrats and Republicans agree that Mueller ‘has a history of standing up to the White House’. Meanwhile, the Washington Post reports Trump growing increasingly angry with staff; some have turned to impeachment gallows humour, some are contacting consultants and circulating their CVs . See:

Anglo-American relations have encompassed many complex dealings through wars and competition for world markets. Since 1940 they have been military allies enjoying a ‘special relationship’ as wartime allies, and NATO partners. However petitions calling for a ban on President Trump’s state visit attracted almost two million signatures, sufficient to  trigger a debate in Parliament last week. Petitioners were encouraged by street demonstrations in many cities. The Westminster discussion coincided with further anti-Trump demonstrations in London, Glasgow, Brighton and other cities. This week, in a snub to the BBC’s ‘negative’ reporting on US politics, which he called fake news, President Trump has refused to give BBC interviews. Pray for the free press and the BBC, as they continue to call those in power to account.

Donald Trump wants to impose a temporary ban on access to the USA from seven Muslim nations. 9/11 Islamists were mostly Saudi Arabian (not on his list). Some statistics indicate that guns, not Islamism, are the biggest killer of Americans. Annual figures for unnatural deaths in America are: Islamic jihadists - 2; far-right Caucasian terrorists - 5; US-born Islamic jihadists - 9; toddlers playing with a gun - 21; lightning strikes - 31; lawnmower accidents - 69; hit by a bus - 26; shot by a fellow American - 11,737. Many believe that the efforts of conservative Republicans to ‘protect Americans’ are at best misplaced and at worst deceived. The gun lobby is seemingly unquestioned and manages to avoid the spotlight even when there is a mass shooting. Many say the gun lobby, like the fossil fuel lobby, has been pulling strings of successive US governments. Pray for the Trump administration to look again at the issue of guns.

Queenslanders will be looking to their parliament to reject a radical abortion bill after it failed to garner the support of a parliamentary committee charged with investigating its merits, according to Australian Christian Lobby Queensland director Wendy Francis. She called on both major parties to stick by their election commitment not to change current abortion laws, in the face of growing community opposition to the proposed bill. Pray for this law to be rejected by all Parliamentarians. Meanwhile, recently in Washington tens of thousands of anti-abortion activists 'marched for life', spurred on by Donald Trump who has vowed to end taxpayer-funded abortion. Pray for babies to be protected when they are most vulnerable, in the womb, and for governments to give dignity and value to unborn children.
